I’m 58 with many physical problems. I want to retire from my job and apply for ssdi. How do I succeed?

First ask your doctor if he thinks you would qualify because he is the one that will give social security the info on your health. If he says yes, ask him if he knows a good person who does the applications for ssdi. If not, check on the Internet for people in your area. The person doing it does not have to be a lawyer so if you find someone who is not a lawyer, find out how long and how successfully they have been doing this. Mine was not a lawyer and if there was not back pay due he would charge nothing. If there was back pay he would get 1/2 of the back pay. Mine was approved exactly when I could start it so I did not pay anything. So check more than one person and check out the charges.
