I had a spinal fusion 6 months ago to fix an unstable low back (Spinal Stenosis). I had horrible pains down my legs due to the Sciatic nerve being pinched and I could barely walk. The nerve is free now and I have no pain going down my leg anymore. However, I do still have a lot of back pain in my low back. I’m wondering if I can continue to do nursing. The constant bending is aggravating my back pain so bad I have to take pain meds to keep going. How do you cope with this problem? Any real help would be appreciated. Thanks.
I now have a titanium cage with side rods in my low back screwed into three vertebrae. My low back is fixed because of all the metal in it. I can’t in anyway bend where the cage is implanted.

jmg256 asked:

I am having surgery for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis (L-5 region) in about three weeks, I live alone and live on a 3rd floor walk-up, after the surgery about how long will I be able to perform normal activities (go up and down stairs) and be able to go back to work? Also I am in incredible pain when walking and standing, will this usually be corrected after surgery? Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

Surgery for Spinal Stenosis?

Len Anders asked:

X-Ray indicated that my wife has what is called as spinal stenosis. Physical therapy has not helped much and now surgery seems to be the only option. I’m told that the success rate is about 70% and there are other horor stories that make is wonder whether it’s worth taking the risk. I would appreciate if you would share your experience or someone in your family who has gone through the surgery. Thanks
